Teachers teaching subjects they do not have a degree in!

The chronic shortfall of core subject teachers continues and has lead to several initiatives to try and tempt Maths and Science graduates into teaching. For instance bursaries and scholarships of up to £25,000 have been offered for the most sought after and highly qualified candidates.

As the shortage continues what is happening is that universities are recruiting teachers to teach subjects that they do not necessarily hold a degree for. The expansion of SKE (Subject knowledge enhancement) is essential according to teacher trainers who say these programmes need to be expanded to meet the need for physics, chemistry, maths and computing teachers.
